Your Struggles Don’t Define You

People with mental illness often feel defined by their struggles. Although it can make daily life challenging, it doesn’t represent the whole person. With the proper support, people with mental health issues can live successful and fulfilling lives.

As a society, we can do better to support these people. Last week, I discussed stigma, an issue that needs work. If we are going to make a change, it starts with understanding. We have to continue to understand mental health. It’s vital to watch what we’re projecting out into the world. Outdated stereotypes and derogatory language only make this issue grow. Instead, take time to understand what other people go through. Talk to people and hear real stories, not just what you read in a fictional book or see in a dramatic movie.

We tend to focus on people’s limitations rather than their strengths, which can lead to low self-esteem. Many people feel limited and like they can’t persevere. Instead, they stay in a fixed state that prevents them from moving forward in life. This can lead to many problems as people try to build their lives professionally and personally. Resilience is key to rising above challenges.

Your diagnosis doesn’t define you. Your challenges don’t define who you are. You are bigger than whatever you struggle with. If you have a mental health issue, don’t let it stop you from reaching your goals. You have a purpose. Show the world what you can do!
