Stepping Stones to Inclusion

Inclusion is the cornerstone of who we are. It’s something that we feel should be increased in both the workplace and our personal lives. I truly believe that taking small actions can lead to bigger positive changes. Here are some steps you can take:

1. Books and content:

Reading and viewing content is an easy way to learn about other people. Social media is a wonderful place to gain perspective into mental health and/or neurodiversity. If social media is not your thing, books are another good way to gain insight.

2. Be a good listener:

If you are not mentally ill or neurodivergent, don’t think you know better than those who are. Many of these people are very articulate if you just give them the chance. Don’t assume they can’t effectively communicate what their lives are like. Ask a lot of mindful and important questions. Always be sensitive but don’t dance around the topic(when appropriate). Change sometimes starts with hard questions. If you have a close friend who is willing to share their experiences, listen very closely.

3. Balance:

Balance is key. Sometimes accommodations will be needed, other times, they will not. Excessive accommodations can lead to problems. It can cause people to make excuses for unacceptable behavior(that’s not related to the actual condition). It can also limit people, leading them to feel weak.

4. BE KIND:

Kindness trumps all. It’s an easy, everyday way to spread inclusion. We are human, make mistakes, and can’t be perfect all the time. However, we should be on a journey to be kinder people. It’s imperative to observe when we are not and think of ways to do better! Ask yourself, what prevented you from understanding the situation? Always strive to learn more about other people’s experiences and stories.

These are a few ways to build a kinder and more inclusive workplace and society. These people want what we all want in life. It’s so important to remember that these people want to earn money, make friends, be part of society, and have fun! Give them a fair chance and you will notice many of them are outstanding employees and awesome friends! Let’s keep working to make positive change!
